Check or Money OrderWrite a check or purchase a money order, and mail it to the address on your statement. Always write your account number on your check or money order to ensure proper credit. Online Bill PayMost banks and credit unions offer free online bill pay. Using this, the bank will print the check for you, and will also mail it for you, saving postage. Always include your account number when you set up the bill payment to ensure proper credit.Pay AheadIf you mail a check or money order, you're paying for a stamp and for money order or check processing fees. This can add up over a year. By paying two or three months at a time, you reduce your annual outlay. For example, if you spend $1 for a money order, sending 12 payments each year costs $20.76 for money orders and postage. If instead you pay 2 months at a time, you only send 6 payments and pay $10.38 each year. Paying 3 months at a time, you send 4 payments and pay $5.19 in postage and money order fees per year.If your account is unmetered, just multiply your monthly bill by 2 or 3 to get the amount to pay ahead. If your account is metered, estimate whether your usage will be higher or lower in the next month or two, and adjust accordingly. If you overpay, it will be credited to your account anyway.Paying ahead is also great if you're going to be travelling, to make sure that your account doesn't go into arrears while you're away.Other MethodsYour Association may allow other payment methods, such as credit card, debit card, or automatic bank draft. Banks charge hefty fees for these services, so many smaller associations will avoid these methods so that they do not have to pass on extra costs to the membership. Larger associations are more likely to provide these methods.
